A Sweet, Ruffled, Puff-Sleeved Top!

My latest sewing project is this top, made yesterday. What do you think? The fabric I chose is white cotton, with a gold butterfly and hummingbird print. I used the bodice piece of a dress pattern because I knew I wanted to add a bit of a ruffle to the bottom of this shirt.

Another detail is the short, puffy sleeves. To make the ruffle you need to sew the fabric to a shorter piece of elastic. If you stretch the elastic out while sewing it will pull back the fabric into this ruffly shape. If you try this, you will either need a sewing machine or a third hand. Otherwise it is pretty impossible. This is a fairly new technique for me, and it turned out better than I could've hoped!

I like how the shiny pattern makes this top more dressy and elegant, since the ruffles and sleeves are a little subtle far away. Sewing this I ran into basically no problems, which was a huge record for me. I still have to iron it (trust me, it's bad) but once that's done I cannot wait to wear it.
